Great night at Koko recently where Julien Temple’s documentary about Canvey Island misfits Dr Feelgood was premiered, closely followed by a raucous gig from Wilko Johnson and guests. The film is very good although after a while, the comparison likening the Feelgoods to dodgy bank robbers became a bit tiresome. Overall though it’s a well put together film with some fantastic sequences where Wilko is being interviewed (with obligatory Telecaster) in front of Canvey’s sea wall, or in front of refinery tanks or run-down amusements.
The gig was pretty good too, despite an increasingly drunken Temple occasionally lurching on to rant about “rock n roll cinema”… there were also some slightly odd special guests, Alison Moyet – who delivered a rousing ‘Down by the Jetty’, rock n roll accordion supremo Slim (who definitely added to ‘Woolly Bully’ – I’ve never seen an accordion played behind the head Hendrix-style before!). There was also harmonica support from rock journo, Charles Shaar Murray…
